How to send a package

When you send a letter or package to Greg you are not paying to send it directly to Afghanistan. You are sending the package to an APO or military address. The mail is then taken to Greg by the "when we have extra room" method. This means it could take days, weeks or as long as a month for him to get it. Greg also may not get the package/letter in the order that it was sent. Remember do not send prohibited items! They will assume that Greg requested the item and he will be found guilty until proven innocent. All this being said Greg truly does enjoy contact from home. There is something about a letter or a package that an email can't match.

How to send a package

1.   Look at what you plan to send and make sure nothing is prohibited. They will check the boxes when they arrive for security purposes.

2.   How heavy is the box. If the box is heavy it is more economical to use a priority mail flat rate box.

3.   Fill out a Customs FORM 2976-A. They are available at the post office. It will ask what is inside the box and about how much it is worth.

4.   Take the box to the US post office with your customs form. They will attach the form to the outside of the box.

Helpful hints

  • The post office will mail you the flat rate boxes and Customs forms for free. You can order them online and they will be delivered quickly for no charge.
  • Do Not overnight, sign on delivery, or next day air mail. The package will not get there any faster and will only cause problems.
  • I have had the best luck with Priority mailing packages. They take less time to arrive at the APO.
  • You can mail a letter for the standard 41 cent stamp.
  • Number your box so we know if he gets it or if it got destroyed on the way.

Prohibited Items!

  • Hazardous items

  • Pornographic, suggestive items to include men’s magazines like Maxem
